I didn’t plan on becoming a rehab counsellor, but I am so glad I did because I truly love what I do. This video shares some of the reasons why I’m so passionate about my job and my industry.

I’ve had quite a few people ask me over the last couple of weeks why I love being a rehab counsellor. It’s a really good question, because I never actually thought this was what I was going to do.
Like many people I didn’t do as well in my HSC as I would have liked and found myself bouncing around allied health professionals because I wanted to help people. In fact, I wanted to change the world!
I love being a rehab counsellor because it’s given me an opportunity to connect with people who have been in incredible crisis, and so many of my clients are incredible heroes – they have gone through the most traumatic experiences in their life, and I have been able to help them map out a pathway to greatness, and to reconnect with a sense of purpose. And to be able to do things that they possibly would never have done prior to injury, illness or trauma.
It’s an incredible thing to watch a person go from a place of full stop to flat-out living their life, feeling so engaged and happy with who they are. It’s a real privilege. And that’s why I love being a rehab counsellor.
I’m interested to know why do you love being an allied health professional, or working in healthcare – what is it that gives you that whole ‘ohh, I’ve got to get out there and do this’? Is it just your clients or is there something else? Leave your comments below – let me know what it is that you love about being a health professional.
