Like many, I think that the workplace of the future will be much different than it is at the moment, and those changes will be driven by the attitude of the workers themselves. In fact, the nature of work will alter too.
It is said that in the future, power will be held by individuals, not by institutions – we ourselves will be the ones coming up with the big ideas and have the ability to use or share them as we best see fit. We no longer will be being paid for our time in the office, but for our insight (in or out of it).
This will invariably be very uncomfortable for large organisations as they steadily need to give way to workers demanding reasons why they can’t work where they choose considering the digital era we now live in. The ‘cloud’ of data is truly a virtual and global reality that isn’t going to go away.
In fact, some even predict that for those organisations who wish to hold onto the idea of workers coming to the office will redesign the spaces in and around the workplace to reflect a community feel with vibrant precincts, services, entertainment, retail – even housing surrounded by green spaces and easy transport to the office door.
I can only feel that any change to having to make it to an office desk each morning without fail to be quite freeing for everyone. What are your thoughts?
