In our last blog post I wrote about 5 things we can be doing as Rehabilitation Professionals right now to help our clients be ready for work when the job market opens up again.
I am hearing many instances of late, where insurers and third-party sponsors are reluctant to refer clients who need services for assistance because “there are no jobs”.
The problem with this approach is that we disengage clients who are left to wait and see, and we disable them by not helping them develop the knowledge, skills and resilience and they need to be able to navigate applying for work, attending interviews, turning up to work, and managing the new challenges of their health condition or injury will present while at work.
Here is a 3-minute video that explains how we approach solving this problem:
If we as the experts in this space are saying wait and see – we are demonstrating to clients that being passive and not taking ownership for what we could be doing is acceptable.
- Which will lead to unnecessary time away from work
- Which will lead to more symptoms and the increased likelihood of secondary mental health conditions
- Which will create an unnecessary cost budget to employer insurers and the community at large
We don’t have to perpetuate this wait and see approach. It is my personal opinion that this wait and see approach is unethical as it contributes to ill health – not recovery and wellness.
As the video above explains 1 thing we can be doing right now and that is to help clients learn how to use their innate strengths to overcome adversity. So that when the job market opens up they are
- Engaged
- Empowered
- Educated
- READY
How can you do this?
Well we have done that for you. Here at Purple Co we have created the Purpose for People Program. This is an excellent resource as a stand-alone program, or as an adjunct to rehabilitation case management. We love partnering with other rehabilitation providers, employers, health professionals and insurers to engage, educate and empower people who are learning how to live with a chronic injury or illness in a COVID-19 job market.
If you would like to know how this program can help you, a client of yours or someone you know – reach out to us at Purple Co so we can share some more information with you.
Until next time, here’s to making work work well,
Jo
