As a business owner, I really needed to deal with my own baggage and attitudes around money. Working with Natalie Green really helped me to understand my money attitudes and their limitations to my business and my life. Natalie has generously agreed to share with the Business of 1 Community some of the keys you need to address your own money baggage. Let me know what comes up for you; has this article opened your eyes to your own attitudes regarding money?
After working with women from all walks of life for over 20 years it still never ceases to amaze me how many women I see who under value themselves and settle for far less than they deserve.
Money issues come up frequently for women and indeed I have yet to meet a working woman who isn’t secretly carrying around a bit of “emotional money baggage”. For example, maybe you have debt, or perhaps you’re ready to increase your fees or meet with your boss to ask for a raise but you’re feeling pangs of guilt. Or maybe you see the perfect mentoring program you want to invest in but your partner is skeptical that it will be a wise investment for you.
We all grow up with our own money story, generally handed on from one generation to the next, and we believe that to be true and tend to live our lives with this belief around money being what drives the choices we make. Are you someone who was told ‘money doesn’t grow on trees’, ‘you have to work hard to make money’, ‘rich people are greedy’ etc etc
What’s important isn’t whether you do or you don’t have some of the most common money issues many women face; but whether your money beliefs are serving you.
One thing is guaranteed, if you carry past baggage with you, you’ll have a much tougher time creating success. The mistake most working women (especially entrepreneurs) make is in not knowing exactly what kind of financial actions they should take, because the topic of money rarely gets discussed.
Money should not be a taboo subject or one we feel guilty about discussing for fear of upsetting others, or due to the old ‘tall poppy syndrome’. Instead, as independent, empowered women of the 21st Century we should be comfortable around money and understand how we can make money work for us to address the spiritual, emotional and practical priorities that combine to have us back in control of our financial future and give us the lifestyle we truly deserve.
This is why I’m sharing 3 of my FAVOURITE tips with you on how to help you make and keep more money as you move forward in living your ideal lifestyle.
How do you treat your money ?
Is it filed away neatly in your wallet and you keep track of money coming in and money going out on a regular basis ? OR is there money lying around all over the place, loose change in your bag, your coat pockets, your car, under cushions ?
When people don’t respect money they disempower themselves, money doesn’t have control over you, its just money, it is the energy and value that you give the money that matters….when people fundamentally disrespect money there is something in themselves that they’re not respecting. As my mentor says, how you do money is how you do everything !.
Tip #1: Pay Attention to Money and Start Tracking Your Income Daily
Money needs to be cared for, nurtured and appreciated and you have the choice as to whether to attend to it positively or negatively. Track every cent flowing into your life and business daily and you’ll be paying positive attention.
If you track your inflow of money and keep increasing your daily goal you’ll soon have money flowing in daily (gifts, wages, refunds, loose change etc), become aware of your patterns and be able to be proactive not reactive and thus make informed choices re how to manage your money, how to spend your time and energy and therefore improve your overall sense of self.
Make the time to track your money daily as this powerful action can increase how much you make.
Tip #2: Let the Past, Stay In The Past
Women tend to hold themselves to a level of perfectionism that leaves no room for errors. Trust me, we’ve all lent money to people we know we shouldn’t have, or given away our power with money, or let fear of what others would think keep us playing small or we’ve bought something that we later regretted.
You cannot change the past but what you can do is stop carrying it around with you ! So instead of beating yourself up, feeling guilt or shame, or blaming circumstances for what’s happened, learn how to forgive yourself. Forgiveness is an act of extreme compassion, strength and understanding for the small part of you that was doing her best when you made those decisions. Go ahead, give yourself the absolute true gift of forgiveness for what you have done in the past and ensure you take a new path moving forward.
Tip #3: Create Money Boundaries That Empower You and Others
Women tend to cave in on their boundaries because they feel responsible for other peoples’ feelings. However, giving in actually means giving up your self-respect and in turn often losing the respect of others. And that negative energy often flows through into other areas of your life, your business, your relationship, impacting your income, cash flow, the types of people you attract in your life, and so much more.
I believe that it’s far better to experience some temporary discomfort when upholding a boundary than it is to untangle a money mess later on. Boundaries are easily upheld by taking a compassionate, yet firm stand for what you are prioritizing.
Money, is just a mirror of how much you believe in YOU. Money really is a metaphor for your self-worth….so I ask you….how do you do money ?
You don’t have to be consumed with money, but you DO want to welcome it into your life. What are you now going to do differently moving forward ?[contentbox width=”600″ borderwidth=”1″ borderstyle=”none” bordercolor=”000000″ dropshadow=”0″ backgroundcolor=”F5F5F5″ radius=”0″]Focussing on money doesn’t make us greedy, selfish, uncaring or insensitive, it has the opportunity to make us an extraordinary human being and a greater version of ourselves because of the huge growth opportunity that focussing on a money breakthrough has for each of us to give our gifts to others with nothing truly holding us back[/contentbox]
