Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow! Friday afternoon 4.30pm, and I am celebrating with another Business of 1 participant, who has in the past week resigned from her full time salaried position. So excited is she, that the case load of 80+ incredibly complex cases seems all but a puff of wind to blow into her sails as she heads out the door in less than 4 weeks time.
About 6 weeks ago, Liz and I met for a chat.<!–more–> A chat about how to address being dissatisfied with work; about being lost ; about a desire to reignite a passion for clinical work; about desiring a lifestyle where she did not have to be on call and dance to someone else tune; about an opportunity to actively make a difference in the lives of real people. Poor Liz, when we met she knew there was a better way; she just didn’t know how to access it.
Liz asked me if I thought it was possible for her to be able to make it as a contractor/consultant and what the shape of that could potentially look like. Well, having known Liz for a number of years and having worked alongside this excellent operator with a strong commitment to empowering change, I saw the potential for an extraordinary consulting practise with a lifestyle that provided the “better way” Liz had been looking for.
I presented the Business of 1 model to Liz, and she took a hold of it; applied it; thought about it and in doing so her passion and her commitment grew.
The ever present nagging doubt I soften see with salaried employees thinking of making the break to a Business of 1 was also in Liz – Will there be enough work for me; who will want me; what if I can’t get any referrals……….We discussed a targeted approached to building a profile of expertise.
So, I am so delighted that Liz can share with us that she resigned on Thursday and has three income generation leads ( ie different, discrete) referral sources by Friday! Yes folks, when you know what it is you can offer; and the problem you can solve, people wanting that solution are going find you very very attractive.
So Liz has 4 weeks left as a salaried employee, and during this time her employer will make her work really hard! She knows that. However Liz has 4 weeks to build her credibility; expand her network and dream of summer where she can write reports from the beach. (and given time I will have her dictating them so that it takes ½ the time so there is more time for swimming).
Sacred of not getting referrals?
Let me ease your anxiety:
Become really clear about you will not do
Become even clearer about what solution you offer.
And know what you are an expert in – it’s there, it’s in you
PS Liz is a real person who was more than happy for me to share her story with you – give Liz some real encouragement. Leave a comment below. I will pass it onto her for you
Have a great week
